Memoirs of the Beast: My '76 Ford LTD

By jonasOct 30, 20230

In the vibrant '80s, while most kids were raving about their flashy new rides, I had my trusty beast - a 1976 Ford LTD.

That colossal car had seen family vacations, towing our Airstream across states, and more history than I could even fathom. But by the time it was handed down to me, it felt like piloting a land yacht.

One day, after sipping on a classic McDonald's chocolate shake, I made a hasty exit from the lot. Too hasty, it turned out. The mammoth-sized LTD's fender brushed the car next to mine a bit too affectionately. Panic surged through me, and without thinking, I sped off. When whispers of police inquiries reached my ears days later, I was mortified. Somehow, my parents handled it, but the specifics of their intervention remained a mystery.

Then, there was that night by the Wabash River. I can't even remember her name, but that night our teenage emotions took over in the backseat of the Ford. The windows, fogged up with passion, held onto our secret.

Installing a tape deck in that beast introduced me to the whims of car dashboard wiring. Fuses seemed to have a personal vendetta against me, blowing out every so often.

While some might've cringed at the thought of driving such a mammoth in the '80s, that Ford LTD was my rite of passage. It was a testament to the fleeting moments, the blunders, and the joys of growing up.
